Originally opened under the name Goldpan Gifts, Kobuk Coffee Company was established in 1969 by Patsy James. Goldpan was renowned as an eclectic Anchorage trading post, carrying everything from Eskimo artifacts to bone china cups and saucers. In the early 70's, well ahead of the gourmet coffee craze, Patsy began to sell a variety of whole bean specialty coffees and added the name Kobuk Coffee Company to the existing store.

Kobuk was purchased by Michael, Nina, and Deborah Bonito in 1993 and now specializes in coffee, tea and china. The old fashioned charm still lingers, along with the scent of the spicy house tea, dubbed "Samovar Tea" after the Russian brewing pot.
